Methodology

How the index is built

United Kingdom

Registered main charities in the Charity Commission register for England and Wales are included when their name or working name, activities or charitable objects refer to Islam, Muslims, mosques, Zakat or related terms, or when they are overseas-aid or religious charities whose website asks for Zakat, Sadaqah or Qurbani. Charities registered only in Scotland (OSCR) or Northern Ireland are not yet included.

United States

501(c)(3) organisations in the IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File are included when their name refers to Islam or Muslims, when the IRS classes them under Islam (NTEE X40), or when they are relief, human-services or grant-making organisations with revenue of $1m or more whose Form 990 describes their work in Islamic terms, or whose website asks for Zakat, Sadaqah or Qurbani. Many mosques are not required to file Form 990, so they may appear with no revenue.

The index measures size, not quality: it does not rate effectiveness, overheads or Zakat eligibility. Charities matched by the rule only in passing were removed after review.
