How to calculate zakat
- Count what you own on your zakat date: cash, bank and savings, gold and silver, shares and funds, crypto, business stock and cash, and money you are owed and expect to get back.
- Take off what you must pay: debts and bills due now and, for a mortgage or long-term loan, the capital repayments due in the next 12 months.
- Compare with the nisab: if what remains is at or above the nisab, zakat is due.
- Pay 2.5% of it (2.577% if you use the Gregorian year), to the eight categories of recipients the Quran names (9:60).
Where scholars differ (jewellery, pensions, long-term investments and debts), the calculator shows the common positions and lets you choose. It is not a fatwa: for your own situation, ask a qualified scholar.
Frequently asked questions
How is zakat calculated?
Add up the zakatable wealth you have held for a lunar year (cash, savings, gold, silver, investments, business stock and money owed to you), subtract debts you must pay now, and if the total is at or above the nisab, pay 2.5% of it. If you work to the Gregorian year, many scholars use 2.577% instead.
What is the nisab for zakat in 2026?
On 22 October 2026, the nisab was £808 ($1,082) using the silver standard of 612.36 grams, or £8,483 ($11,361) using the gold standard of 87.48 grams. It changes with metal prices, so check it on the day your zakat is due.
Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?
Scholars differ. Many UK and US zakat bodies recommend the silver nisab because it is lower, so more people pay and more reaches those in need; others use gold. If you are unsure, follow the guidance of a scholar you trust.
How much zakat do I pay on gold?
Zakat on gold is 2.5% of the value of the gold you own, if your total zakatable wealth is at or above the nisab. The calculator values gold by weight and purity (24, 22, 21, 18 or 14 carat) at today's price. Scholars differ on jewellery you wear.
Do I pay zakat on my pension?
Scholars differ. In the UK, the National Zakat Foundation counts the zakatable part of a workplace or private pension pot each year, even before you can access it, in proportions it gives by fund type (for example 50% for a mixed fund, 25% if you do not know), and allows you to delay paying until the pension pays out. In the US, AMJA counts a 401(k) or IRA at the vested balance you could withdraw today after income tax and the 10% early-withdrawal penalty; the Zakat Foundation of America does not count accounts you cannot freely access. Final-salary pensions are generally not counted. The calculator lets you choose.
Do I pay zakat on shares and ISAs?
If you trade shares, zakat is generally counted on their full current value. For long-term holdings, the National Zakat Foundation counts the companies' zakatable assets or, when they are not known, 25% of the value as a proxy: 2.5% of that is 0.625% of the holding. A cash ISA is savings and is counted in full.
Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?
Scholars differ. The Hanafi school counts gold and silver jewellery; the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools generally exempt jewellery worn for personal use. The calculator counts it by default, and you can leave it out.
Can I deduct my mortgage from zakat?
Scholars differ on debts. A common view, followed by the National Zakat Foundation, is to deduct only the capital repayments due in the next 12 months, not the whole balance and not interest.
Can I add Gift Aid to my zakat?
In the UK, the National Zakat Foundation accepts Gift Aid on zakat because it is your own tax being reclaimed. Your zakat is the amount you give; the 25p for every £1 the charity claims from HMRC is extra.
When should I pay zakat?
Zakat is due once a lunar year has passed on wealth at or above the nisab. Many people pay in Ramadan; Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027. See our Islamic calendar.
How we count use: to improve the calculator we record de-identified totals for each visit (the currency, the size band of the result, for example “£500 to £999”, the methods chosen, the features used and which listed charities you clicked through to) under a random id that lasts only while the page is open, kept for 13 months. No name, email, IP address, cookie or exact figure is stored, and it is not linked to your account. If you rejected analytics in our cookie banner, nothing is recorded. Wusul is not a charity and does not collect donations. This calculator follows methods commonly used by UK and US zakat bodies. It is not a fatwa; for your own situation, ask a qualified scholar. Charity shortlists are ranked by the income charities report to regulators and are not an endorsement or a judgement on zakat eligibility.
