The model

Four stages of fundraising maturity

From improvised Ramadan campaigns to year-round giving shaped by each donor.

  1. Seasonal

    Campaigns are improvised around Ramadan.

Fundraising happens in bursts around Ramadan, planned at short notice. Donor data sits in several places, results are judged by the total raised, and most first-time donors are not heard from again until next year.

  2. Structured

A plan for the season, measured simply.

There is a plan for the main seasons and a donor database. Campaigns run on one or two channels, reports come from each platform separately, and donors get a thank you but no planned journey.

  3. Connected

Data, campaigns and measurement work together.

Donor data feeds the campaigns, audiences are segmented by community and motivation, and every campaign is tracked from ad to donation. Ramadan is planned months ahead, and new donors are invited into regular giving.

  4. Donor-led

Year-round giving, shaped by each donor.

Giving is planned across the whole Islamic year, messages adapt to each donor segment, budgets move with results during a campaign, and success is measured by donor lifetime value. Zakat is handled with full transparency.

What it measures

Seven pillars, 21 questions

PillarWhy it matters
Donor data and consentEvery other pillar depends on knowing who your donors are and what they agreed to.
Audience and cultural intelligenceMuslim donors are many communities, not one audience; messages land when they speak to the right one.
Islamic calendar planningMuslim giving follows the Islamic year; the charities that plan ahead own the moments that matter.
Channels and mediaDonors move between platforms; the right mix, coordinated, reaches them where they give.
MeasurementWhat you cannot measure you cannot improve, and boards and donors increasingly ask.
Retention and regular givingKeeping a donor costs less than finding a new one; regular giving smooths the year between Ramadans.
Trust and zakat transparencyDonors give zakat where they trust it reaches the right people; transparency is a fundraising asset.

Frequently asked questions

What is Itqan?

Itqan is a free digital and fundraising maturity assessment for Islamic charities. It shows how mature a charity's fundraising is, across 7 pillars: donor data and consent, audience and cultural intelligence, islamic calendar planning, channels and media, measurement, retention and regular giving, trust and zakat transparency. It takes about five minutes and gives your stage in each pillar and the next step for each. Itqan means doing work with care and excellence.

What are the four stages?

Seasonal: Campaigns are improvised around Ramadan. Structured: A plan for the season, measured simply. Connected: Data, campaigns and measurement work together. Donor-led: Year-round giving, shaped by each donor.

Who is it for?

Fundraising, marketing and leadership teams at Islamic and Muslim-led charities and nonprofits, in the UK, the US and Canada, the Gulf and elsewhere, of any size.

Is it free, and what happens to my answers?

Yes, it is free. Your answers stay in your browser while you take it, and you see your stage and priorities straight away. If you ask for the full report, we email it to you as a PDF, and we receive your name, email, organisation and scores so we can follow up. Your scores are added to our anonymised benchmark only if you tick that box. See our privacy notice.

How was the model built?

From our team’s work with Islamic charities and from published fundraising practice. It is a self-assessment, not an audit, and it does not give religious rulings. Once enough charities have taken part, we will publish anonymised benchmarks so you can compare your stage with the sector.

How is my stage worked out?

Each answer sits at one of four levels. Your stage in a pillar is the average of its three answers, and your overall stage is the average across the seven pillars.
