As Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi noted at the launch of NurAI, "we have witnessed how AI systems give answers that contradict Sharia principles when asked about Islamic financial law or quote unauthentic sources when discussing aqidah issues. This is a gap that we must close." ## NurAI: Malaysia's Shariah-compliant LLM In August 2025, Malaysian tech company [Zetrix AI Bhd unveiled NurAI](https://www.enanyang.my/news/20250812/Finance/958290?ref=wusul.io), described as the world's first Shariah-aligned large language model application. The Deputy Prime Minister further described NurAI as a form of "technological diplomacy" that would position Malaysia as a leader in Shariah-compliant AI and open doors to strategic cooperation with ASEAN countries and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). NurAI is based on a "mixture of experts" architecture that distributes queries across a network of specialized models, ensuring fast response and reduced computational cost. The development team will also work with leading religious institutions including Indonesia's Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA), and Egypt's Al-Azhar University to establish a Shariah-compliant framework. It is fluent in multiple Arabic dialects including Egyptian, Gulf, and Levantine, and supports seamless switching between Arabic and English. This deep understanding of dialects is a significant differentiator from global AI models that default to English and are trained predominantly on English-language datasets. The ALLAM model was developed by over 120 AI specialists, including 35 researchers with PhDs, half of whom were women, and fine-tuned by 600 domain experts and 250 evaluators. The company is fully owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and the chatbot is compliant with the Kingdom's Personal Data Protection Law, with all data stored locally. Humain's CEO described the launch as a "historic milestone" in developing sovereign AI that is both technically advanced and culturally rooted. The app has expanded beyond conversation to include features like Mcreative, an AI-powered creative tool for creating Muslim-friendly visual content, Quran reading with translations and audio, prayer times with athan reminders, Qibla direction, Islamic podcasts and videos, and even a Muslim shop for products and services. Users span more than 160 countries. The company emphasizes that the AI is not a fatwa service and does not replace consultation with qualified scholars, it functions as a supportive and educational companion. ## The global trend: Islamic AI and faith-sensitive design This movement is not limited to Islam. Globally, there is growing recognition that AI systems must reflect the cultural and religious values of their users. The launch of Humain Chat comes as startups and state-backed companies race to establish themselves as regional leaders in the technology, competing with similar large language models like Falcon Arabic from Abu Dhabi's state research arm. The dominance of the English language in the industry has provided an opportunity for companies to develop AI apps capable of providing native language services to the world's 380 million Arabic speakers. These models can provide more detailed output in Arabic than the most powerful algorithms offered by ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and China's DeepSeek.
